Pieve of San Giovanni Battista in Molli and the Marble Quarries: Treasures of the Montagnola Senese

🏛️ The Pieve of Molli

The  Pieve of San Giovanni Battista in Molli  is a Romanesque gem dating back to the 11th century, located in one of the highest areas of the Montagnola Senese.  Its three-nave structure, divided by round arches supported by sturdy square pillars, showcases ancient architectural mastery.  The Romanesque bell tower was partially rebuilt after being struck by lightning in 1930.  Inside, a 15th-century panel attributed to Stefano di Giovanni, known as Sassetta, depicts a Madonna and Child.  it.wikipedia.org

⛏️ The Marble Quarries

Near the pieve are the ancient, now disused,   yellow Siena marble quarries.  These quarries supplied the prized marble used in significant historical buildings, such as the Siena Cathedral.  The path leading to the quarries offers an immersive experience into the region's natural and geological history.

🌳 The Monumental Chestnut Tree

Close to the quarries stands a majestic  century-old chestnut tree, known as "Il Castagnone, " with a circumference of over 9 meters and a height of about 12 meters, symbolizing the longevity and resilience of Tuscan nature.
