Discovering the Merse River: Where Nature Meets History

The  Merse River  originates in the Colline Metallifere of Grosseto, between Poggio Croce di Prata and Poggio di Montieri, at an altitude of 848 meters, and flows for about 70 km before joining the Ombrone River.  Along its course, it traverses landscapes of extraordinary beauty, among lush forests and historical landmarks, making it an ideal destination for hikes, refreshing swims, and moments of relaxation immersed in nature.

1.  The Sea of Brenna

Known as "the sea of Brenna, " this stretch of the Merse near the village of Brenna is famous for its clear and calm waters, ideal for swimming and relaxing.  Ancient weirs created by medieval monks form natural pools that are deep and current-free, perfect for a rejuvenating bath.

2.  La Steccaia and the Ricausa Mill

Continuing along the river, one encounters "la steccaia, " an ancient barrier that regulates water flow, and the  Ricausa Mill, built in 1318.  These sites offer not only natural beauty but also an immersion into history and medieval engineering.

3.  Le Roste and the Ferruginous Spring
