Castello di Celsa: A Renaissance Treasure in the Heart of Tuscany

The  Castello di Celsa  is one of the most fascinating historic residences in Tuscany, nestled among the hills of the Montagnola Senese.

Located just a few kilometers from Sovicille, this castle offers a unique experience for those wishing to discover the beauty and history of the region.

🕰️ History and Architecture

Originally built in the 13th century as a defensive stronghold of the Republic of Siena, the castle was transformed in the 16th century into a noble residence by the Sienese Celsi family.  Architect Baldassarre Peruzzi was commissioned for the renovation, which led to the creation of a splendid circular chapel and a courtyard with refined classical proportions.

Over the centuries, the castle changed hands among various noble families, including the de' Vecchi, the Antinori, and the Aldobrandini.  Each of these families contributed to shaping the current appearance of the castle, adding valuable architectural and landscape elements.

🌿 The Italian Gardens

One of the most charming features of Castello di Celsa is its Italian garden, designed in the 17th century.  The garden is characterized by geometrically shaped flower beds bordered by boxwood hedges, citrus trees in terracotta pots, and a semicircular fishpond that serves as a belvedere.  The flower beds reproduce the coat of arms of the Aldobrandini family, with a skillful use of colored gravel and copper minerals creating a unique chromatic contrast.

📍 Visiting the Castle

Castello di Celsa is open to visitors by appointment only.  Guided tours, available in Italian, English, and German, allow exploration of the gardens and the castle's exteriors.  To book a visit, you can send an email to  info@castellodicelsa.com.

📸 A Place to Photograph

Castello di Celsa is an ideal location for photography enthusiasts.  Its architecture, well-maintained gardens, and panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside offer numerous opportunities for memorable shots.  In particular, autumn provides warm and enveloping colors, while spring offers a variety of blooms that further enrich the landscape.
