Villa Cetinale: A Baroque Gem in the Tuscan Countryside

Nestled in the green hills of the  Montagnola Senese,   Villa Cetinale  is one of the most outstanding examples of  Tuscan Baroque architecture. Built between 1676 and 1678 by Cardinal  Flavio Chigi, nephew of Pope Alexander VII, the villa was designed by  Carlo Fontana, a pupil of Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

🏛️ Architecture and Design

The villa is built on three levels and has a square floor plan. The main façade is characterized by a spectacular  double staircase  leading to a marble portal crowned by the Chigi family crest. The rear opens to a formal Italian garden, with boxwood hedges, statues, and citrus trees, following the classical style of the  Giardino all’Italiana.

🌳 The Gardens and the Sacred Park of the Thebaid

Surrounding the villa is a magnificent Baroque garden. A long cypress-lined avenue, known as the  main axis, connects the villa to the  Romitorio, a hermitage on the hill above, accessible by the impressive "Holy Staircase" carved into the rock.

To the north, the  Thebaid Park  unfolds — a wooded area inspired by the deserts of Egypt where early Christian hermits lived. Along a winding path, you’ll find votive chapels, stone crosses, and Baroque statues of praying monks, creating a mystical atmosphere of meditation and silence.

🎭 Historical Events and Cultural Role

Between 1679 and 1692,   Villa Cetinale hosted eight editions of the Palio of Siena, relocated here due to unrest and disease in the city. Though unofficial, these races featured real city contrade and reflect the strong ties between the villa and local culture.

🏰 A Noble Retreat in the 20th Century

In 1977,   British aristocrat Antony Lambton  purchased the estate and restored it meticulously. Under his ownership, the villa became a private retreat for artists and celebrities, hosting guests such as  Kate Moss,   J.K. Rowling, and  Mick Jagger.

🎬 On Screen: From History to Hollywood

The timeless beauty of Villa Cetinale has attracted film and television productions. Recently, it appeared as the summer residence of the Roy family in the HBO series  Succession.
